The Ötztal Valley in Austria is the perfect place for family-friendly rock climbing and hiking. We are in love with Austria. Peter and I fell so head over heels for this country that I google searched, “Is Austria an easy place to live as an expat.” We still dream about it, and we will be back! The Ötztal Valley is the perfect place to adventure as a family.
Family- Friendly Hike No. 1: Highline 179

Our first stop in Austria was The Highline 179. This suspension bridge isn’t in the Ötztal valley but it was on the way, so I’m including it! This bridge wasn’t on our itinerary, but when we saw it from the road, we had to stop. Everyone (except me), was excited about running at 400 feet above the ground. I made it 100 steps out on the bridge and had to turn back. The kids and Peter loved exploring the fort ruins on the other side, and after they finished, we explored the castle remains. Even if you don’t cross the bridge, the views are amazing, and it’s wild to think of the people who originally lived here and guarded this beautiful valley! The Highline 179 is an excellent family-friendly hike, activity, and a great exercise opportunity!
Family-Friendly Rock Climbing in the Ötztal Valley.
After The Highline, we continued south to our Air Bnb in Längenfeld. This apartment was another huge win. It was massive and within walking distance to the best family rock climbing crag ever, a Via Ferrata, and family-friendy hiking trails.

The Rock Climbing Crag we found was the best family climbing spot we’ve ever experienced. We have visited many cool climbing spots with our kids in Wales, Italy, and Thailand, but this was by far the best. Not only were the routes clearly labeled and easy to find, but there were two play areas for children at the base.

In the afternoon, Peter took some time and explored this Via Ferrata within walking distance from the apartment.

Family Friendly Hikes in the Ötztal Valley
While in the valley, we enjoyed the sweet town of Längenfeld, which has a great playground with a slackline. We checked out two beautiful hikes, both of which we did with the kids. The first hike we did was super steep and leads to a lovely waterfall. We started this hike from a funky spot, so if you watch our youtube video, I recommend starting here instead of where we did. The other hike, Water Walk, is a steep, gorgeous loop with a suspension bridge.

Unfortunately, we only stayed in this valley for a few days. Our family could have spent a month exploring this outdoor adventurers’ paradise!

What a beautiful part of the world. I’ve never been to Austria. It looks lush 😍
